We have some great new and second hand books on sale at great prices – especially if you are a car or railway enthusiast. In addition to the books shown here, we’ve also got brand new copies of “Surrey and the Motor” at a mere £5 – under half RRP – please come in and have look.

One of our most striking recent acquisitions is this rather wonderful restored trench organ. Please visit us and have a good look at it; if you want to know more about trench organs – e.g. what they are, and why they are called “trench organs” – you will find out in this podcast https://oldfrontline.co.uk/2023/08/12/great-war-music-with-beverley-palin/

We’ve recently revamped our “new additions” cabinet. For example, here’s a World War II jar that contained anti-gas ointment, a 19th century pewter mug, and a very old copy of “Mrs Beeton’s Book of Household Management”.
For more on our recent acquisitions, see Recent Acquisitions – East Surrey Museum

We have an exhibition of local crested commemorative china ornaments in our Victorian room – please come and and have a look. (By “local”, we mean ornaments made for clubs, organisations and people in and around Caterham; some were made as far away as Stoke-on-Trent.)

We have two interesting additions to our Victorian Room. One is a poster for International Stores’ product “Celindo Tea”; the other is a photo of International Stores’ Caterham branch. Can you date them? Come in and have a look at them, and their accompanying text.

We have several new local village history books by the Bourne Society, and a new book celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Stockton to Darlington railway in stock – why not come in and have a good look?

We’ve received some amazing items, some going back to the reign of the Emperor Julian II (AD 360-363), found by detectorists in and around Bletchingley. The items displayed here, and more, are now on display with explanatory texts.

A big, big THANK YOU to Gatwick Airport Community Trust, Curry Fund and Caterham Oxted & Godstone Lions for providing funds to improve the dinosaur/fossil area in the children’s room.

East Surrey Museum is proud to be participating in “Wheels of Time.” It is a fun badge collecting scheme which encourages children aged 5-11 to explore Surrey museums and heritage venues. For more details, see here
Our annual children’s archaeological dig on Saturday 21st/Sunday 22nd June was a great success – please come in and have a look at what local kids excavated – you may be surprised! (And BTW, we’ll be having another children’s archaeological dig on Saturday & Sunday 20th/21st 2026 at Whyteleafe Gardens)
